Beyond the Cornucopia

I volunteer at a Thrift Store every Friday. It is such a cool thing to do! First of all, 100% of the proceeds go towards the running of a bereavement center for kids. Kids who have lost a loved one have a safe place to come and talk, get help, and honor and remember the one they've lost. That's huge.

But, on a personal....FUN!....level, it's such a cool thing to do because I get to lay my hands on everything that comes through the donation door that day! And I get to browse the goodies that have come in all week out in the store. I've scored a couple great pairs of jeans and nice clothes for my kids. I look forward to my 4 hours on Friday sifting through bags and bags of goodies!

Here's what I found last week. I keep drooling over everyone's festive fall mantels. As I may have mentioned here, my decor hasn't gone much beyond a cornucopia stuffed with fake gourdes. So, I was on the look out for thrifty additions to my holiday flare.

Here is the nice brown vase I found already adorned with a lovely orange ribbon for a buck! Nice. Autumnal. But, I thought I could jazz it up a bit. So jazz I did....

I simply removed the ribbon and wrapped some raffia around the vase (adhering with a little hot glue every here and there as I wrapped it around) and tied on some decorative berries and a leaf. Much better! I love it!

Can't wait to see what I find next time!

  2. What a great find for just a dollar! I liked what you did with it, too. This would be a perfect vase to display dried flowers or even your knitting needles. What a great way to help others and have some thrifty fun!
