Fibers on Friday: Heels!

Welcome to Fibers on Friday, a day that we can all come together and parade our crochet and knitting projects! And more specifically this month, to participate in a sock challenge, Turning Heels in the New Year!

How are the socks coming along? I've had much success and I'm still thrilled with the progress. I feel a sock addiction coming on, I must say! I really love the pattern I've suggested for this challenge, it's knitting up so nicely.

Here is our time line for the sock challenge:

Here's where we are in our time line to knit a pair of socks by the end of January:
  • By Dec. 31st everyone needs to have gathered their supplies and checked their gauge.
  • January 7th we'll show off our cuffs and leg of the sock.
  • January 14th we'll show off our heels. Yes, Turning Heels in the New Year!
  • January 21st we should be done our gussetts and foot and be ready to close the toe.
  • January 28th we'll be well into our second sock and we'll display our works in progress.
  • By Feb 4th we should be able to take a picture of our feet adorned in TWO fabulous socks!!

I did decide that I need to teach myself the Continental style of knitting in order to speed things up a bit. So, I watched some videos and started on a washcloth; a project that doesn't mean much, doesn't have to be pretty, but would give me practice. Here it is; the tension is not even, there are some mistakes, but overall I'm happy. I'm not ready to put the new method to the test with socks or a sweater, but I will move on to bigger projects using it.

And as if that wasn't enough knitting, I started a sweater. The Shalom. Ahhhh, I've been waiting and waiting to start this. I put it on the back burner in order to finish the sweater for Afghans for Afghans. Well, that has been mailed off, so onto Shalom!

My list of link parties is listed on my sidebar, but this has been a pretty big week of link-ups which has introduced me to a few more parties:

  1. I'll take a picture of my sock tomorrow and post it. I haven't gotten very far in knitting the foot of my sock. The heel was finished last week. I've been distracted by Valentine's crafts, because I'm in a Valentine's swap. Plus whenever we watch a movie or new show at night, I like to knit scrubbies. I can knit them without looking at them. So I've made several this month.

Great job with Continental knitting! Your sock is coming along nicely.

  2. I actually finished my socks last night. I'll probably post about them next Friday. I used a different heel to the ones I've used before. It was a Fleegle Heel, the pattern for the whole sock, which is toe up is here - http://fleeglesblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/leegles-toe-up-no-flap-no-hassle-sock.html)which worked brilliantly for my fat ankles. Thought I'd share it with your blog in case anyone else has problems getting ankles to fit properly. I tried so many before finding this one.

  3. Hooray for you on learning the Continental style! Hint: Throw that baby into the washer and the dryer, and that stitch tension will even right out (due to shrinkage, of course)! I made it past the heel on my Groovy Socks yesterday (see the WIP post for this week on my blog)--let me say that I HATE gussets. I'd be a sock machine if it weren't for gussets.

  4. I'm committing myself to learning how to knit so I can try out some socks, 'cause the crocheted one I tried were a huge FAIL! Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I vowed that I would learn to knit socks this year. So far I own quite a few knitted pair due to them being gifted to me or I have traded my husband's venison for the socks. Yes, I finally found a purpose to utilize his passion for hunting.

I look forward to reading more of your posts and participating in your link up.

    Happy Fiber Arts Friday!

  7. I've turned heels on sock number two, today.
I am enjoying the sock production line I have going at the moment and if I go on like this I might just do another pair before the month is out :-P

  8. You have some knitting power going! Your sweater will be beautiful in that lovely yarn!

I'm not a sock knitter, so I didn't join in on that one.

    Knit the week-end!!

    :)

  11. Such support! I love this!

AllyB....I'm sorry to say I have no idea what the sock yarn is. I bought it a few years ago. I made a couple of attempts with socks and ripped it out both time. I promise I will try to get back to the yarn store it came from and hope they still have it in stock so I can post what it is....it's wonderful and deserves a shout out!!
